CRUSHED TO DEATH.

[per press association.] WELLINGTON, April 21. : A fatal accident • occurred at the bonded store of Messrs W. and G, Tornbull and Co. at 1 o’clock this afternoon, resulting in the death of one man, and serious injury to another. Two storemen named: Phillip Latham and Edwin Bryant were engaged taking some cases of 'spirits and wine up to the top floor by ■means of a hydraulic lift. They had only a light weight on; both were hiding on the top of. the cases,- .when within a few feet - of the top floor i the chain by which the lift 'is drawn up snapped, and the lift and cargo and men vvere precipitated to the ground 'floor. Latham was picked up insensible, -and expired in a moment or two, both legs •below the knees being absolutely; crushed. The other mail Bryant received a serious shock to the spinal cord, and has been sent to the Hospital. • Latham, it is thought, attempted to jump from the lift, and' was thus crushed between; the floor and the outer woodword of the lift,
