MAN CUT IN TWO BY A SAW.
; (per PRESS ASSOCIATION) ' ' NAPIER, April 19. A man named Smith, working at Wilding’s steam saw-mill at Waipukurau, was cut in half yesterday by falling from a log on to a twin circular saw. He was instantly killed.
THE INQUEST.
DETAILS OF THE ACCIDENT; ■ NAPIER, This day.
At the inquest on the body of John Smith who lost his life at" the sawmill at Waipukurau yesterday, the jury returned a : Verdict of “ Accidental death.” The evidence showed that deceased, who was ' working nearer the saw than was necessary, was at one end of a log and his brother (E. Smith) at; the,other. Deceased was not seen to fall by either of the three witnesses, but they, suddenly heard a loud call or scream, followed by an unusual sound from the saw. - . They then saw deceased lying motionless on the bench, with the saw buried in his body. The engine was stopped almost at the same time as the cry was h'eardj but. when those near- deceased ran up to the bench, he was found to be quite dead, and his body cut in two. The saw had entered deceased’s body at the right side of his rieck i; severing the arm at the" right shoulder, and cutting through the chest in an oblique direction, and coming almost out at the right hip* All the witnesses agreed that death must.have been instantaneous.'
