AUCKLAND ITEMS.

John Kelly, who arrived in this province in 1886, died on Saturday, aged 77. He was present at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, Mr Thomas Barnett was thrown from a buggy at Newmarket, and was seriously hurt. The horse was frightened by an approaching train, Captain Wright, of the Salvation Army, has announced that the divisional headquarters for the Colony will be formed either at Auckland or Dunedin, and twenty stations at centres of population and elsewhere. The racehorses Siesta, Jack, Loch Lomond, and Pastime were landed safely by the Rotomahana. Siesta is reported as having her hind fetlocks scratched or , cut, but it .is not expected the injury will interfere: with her running. Mr R. C. Barstow, Commissioner,-is holding a fresh inquiry into the charges of the girl Wctherall, against Hogan, the master of the Kohimaramara Industrial School. For the Easter Handicap Leonora and Siesta are equal favourites. Heavy rains have interfered lately with training operations. John Moore, a printer, is reported missing from the cutter Lancashire Lass at Whangamate. He is believed to be drowned. He left Sainsbury’s Hotel with his mate Ferro to return to the cutter, and was never again seen, A constable has been despatched to inquire into the circumstances. Two cases of alleged child abduction axe reported, but the police decline to interfere. The persons interested intend to initiate private prosecutions, and have retained Mr E. Hesketh. ; r . ...
