THE TASMANIAN TRAGEDY.
[per press association.] WELLINGTON, April 17. The following are the particulars of the Epping tragedy : —Wilson, a repairer ori the railway, who lived half way between Epping aid Cleveland, had gone to bed at the asual hour on the night of the 9th, He was aroused by stones being thrown, on his house, and got up to find the cause', when he was shot by Ogden, who is 20 years of age. Wilson died shortly afterwards. The murderer then fired through the windows of the house, wounding M. Bofam, who was living in the house. They then appear to have demanded money, and Mrs Wilson gave them what little she had, amounting to 13s. A daughter of Mrs Wilson, aged about 11 years, said she knew Ogden, and, hearing this, the murderers took the girl some distance with them along the main road, but after threatening to shoot Mrs Wilson, who followed them, they released the girl. Before leaving, they had set fire to the house, which was quickly burned to the ground. The act is attributed not to any object of robbery, but rather to an insane desire for Kelly notoriety. Ogden comes from a bad lot, and was an inmate of the Hobart Bcformatory., He is suspected of perpetiadng some recent.cases of sticking up. . ..... •. ; DUNEDIN, April 17.' The.following additional particulars are |o hand re the Tasmanian tragedy : —Ogden and Davis, after leaving Wilson’s, attacked the line,repairerand sealpedhim.■ They also murdered Alfred Holmes, driver of Page’s coach, whom they shot without warning. The murderers were captured by Constable Phillips and two settlers. When taken, they boasted they could have shot the constable and Inspector Palmer whom they covered with their guns in the dark. They were quite unconcerned, and sang Kelly songs on their, way to the lock-up.
