Her Majesty the Queen is sufficiently recovered (rom the accident to her knee, occasioned by falling down a staircase at Windsor Castle on the 22nd nit, to take carriage exercise, but is quite incapable of walking, and can scarcely stand. New Zealand securities remain at last quotations, viz., New Zealand 5 per cent (1889) loan, 106. New Zealand 5 per cent (10.40) loan, New Zealand 4£ per cent (1879-1904) loan, 1021. * New Zealand 4 per cent inscribed stock, 102£. The market for Australian breadstuff's is dull:—Adelaide wheat, | ex warehouse, 50s; New Zealand wheat, , ex warehouse, 46s to 495, according to quality. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 84s. Australian tallow is firm at last quotations, viz.—Best beef, 42s ; best mutton, 44s fid. The total stock of tallow in London to-day is 8100 casks. April 3. In the House of Commons to-day, Lord E. Filzmaurice, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs stated, in reply to a question, that England was not in any way concerned in the disposal of the balance' of the Alabama indemnity, which remains in the hands of the United States Government afterpayment of all claims. Intelligence to hand states that twenty-six persons'have been killed and thirty-nine injured by a boiler explosion at the ironworks at Stazier (sic). April 4. ' In the House of Commons last night, Mr Gladstone assenting, a motion was adopted setting forth that no treaty should be concluded with Portugal unless the same guarantee that England should have commercial freedom on the Congo, and perfect freedom in her action towards civilising Central African tribes. The men recently arrested at Liverpool in connection with the landing of explosives have been exariiined privately. It is believed they are implicated in the recent explosions in London. News is to hand from Ashantee that the ’ King has abdicated, and that the country is now in a state of great confusion.
