CHURCH OR PLAYHOUSE.

NAPIER, April 4, At the meeting of the Synod to-day there was a lengthy and amusing debate, on a motion by Mr Pierce, of Auckland, that lid charge, direct ; or indirect, be made for ad* mission to churches.. His object Was to prevent musical entertainments being given itf cHurclxes- ‘ Aictdeacon Ma-ansell, in a humor* ons speech, opposed the was ultimately lost on a con* sidering that the responsibility of preventing improper performances in ‘ churches'; should be thrown oh the clergyman of each parish. All Saints, St. Matth6ws. and ; St. Paul’s in Auckland, and St. Martin’s in Dunedin, were instanced as places where churches had been used for ; simple musical performances, a charge being made at ’the ; door. ‘ ,Mr Pierce, at the conclusion of the voting, in some heat, laid on the table some copies of the War Cry, the Salvation Army’s organ,-'saying that some of the clergy might like to read them, as they might feel inclined to invite the Army to play antics in their churches, as a variation from the other performances. The Synod refused, leave to let them lie on the table. .
