THREE DESERTERS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, — Three sentries on duty, three watchmen guarding the public weal, have deserted their posts, because they do not like the last bumpkin that a recruiting sergeant had foolishly enlisted in what he deemed a jest. Three of our Councillors, well knowing the difficulty that exists in Palea in finding men willing and competent to represent us, baye determined to show their spleen and make our difficulties greater by compelling us to fill their places also—with, men inferior to Billy Wilson for all they care. The former election lapsed because no representative could be found, and now the nomination of a man who is ludicrously unfit for the position results in his election, simply because no proper candidate would come forward. It seems strange that so little public spirit exists among us, but what shall we say of our properly elected representatives, who desert us in a moment for no fault of ours, but because someone has perpetrated a silly practical joke, the consequences of which he himself probably did not forsee. Billy Wilson is no real difficulty—his retirement can bo easily effected—but our guardians are slighted, not by us, but by Mr Mace or someone else, and they will make us suffer. lam glad that all of the councillors do not esteem their duties to us so lightly, and have enough reason and sense of justice to feel that their resigning would cause expense and embarrassment to our interests and to public business, but would certainly not affect the perpetrators of the offence. Let us hope that other councillors may be found for us who will not desert their posts on any silly pretext or trivial annoyance, for which those they represent are in no way responsible.—-Yours, &C, . , ' FIDELITV.
