THE STEAMER WAIHI ON FIRE.
A rather sensational incident occurred on Friday evening, about half-past six, on board the little steamer Waihi. She was on her last return trip from Lowry Bay, and was abreast of Soatnes Island, when some hoys suddenly shouted out “Fire! Fire !” There was at once a rush tojhe central part of the vessel, where a bright light was seen just at the entrance to the saloon. Some of the females on board were greatly alarmed, and at once fainted. One man belonging to the steamer (says the New Zecdand Times) was about to dash a bucket of water on the light, when, fortunately, he was stopped by another, who, with more judgment, put a piece of sacking over it, and thus smothered the blaze, which happened to he . from a quantity of kerosene that was being poured out to fill the lamps, and, being spilled near a light, was aflame at once. It was stated —though we cannot vouch for the correctness of the assertion—that the man who was about to throw water on; the blazing kerosene—on the principle of locking the stable-door when the horse was stolen —in the excitement of the moment flung the tin of kerosene overboard to ensure the safety of the vessel.
