DUES AND STORAGE.
The Harbour Board will meet to-morrow to reconsider" the present; wharf and storage rates. We hope that members will see their way towards reducing in some form the charges to which shippers are now subject. We have heard from Mr Syraes that the increased wharfage has proved “ odious” to country settlers. If the rate can be lowered, it will have a good effect, and possibly pave the way towards obtaining the consent of the country to a small rate for improvements when it is wanted. As for the storage rate we have all along contended that an alteration should be effected so far as outward shipments are concerned. Free storage should be allowed until the first departure of the steamer after the goods came to hand. If they were not shipped then, by all means let a rate be imposed. As we have explained before, there are strong reasons for the inward storage rate as a check upon making use of the shed as a general warehouse, which would inevitably result if it were taken off.? Of course the state of the Board’s finances will have to be taken carefully into consideration before any change is made. But we hope,Jhowever, that the obnoxious storage rate will be abolished, and if practicable something taken off the wharfage as well.
