WANTED—A LEG.
At Wednesday’s meeting .of : the Hawera Borough Council a, letter was read from Captain Wray, stating that; Whittem, a carpenter, formerly of Hawera, was imwant of an artificial leg.; Government would provide half the cost and Major Atkinson had promised £l. The Borough Council, he understood, had subscribed £5, and 30s had been subscribed in New Plymouth. This would provide the amount necessary ; but Whittem wanted to go to Nelson to get it, and had no funds. He (Captain Wray) would like to know what the council would do. —The Mayor said he had replied, pointing out that the council had already spent a considerable sum on Whittem, and had given £5. He was doubtful whether the council would do any more; but it was now open to the council to grant a sum if it chose.—The letter was ordered to lie on the table.
