BISHOP LUCK IN EXPLANATION.

(per press association.) AUCKLAND, This day. Bishop Luck writes to the Star as follows: “In a paragraphia Saturday’s issue I regret to soy you have made me pose before the Catholic public in both a false and painful position. Whatever my own views are about the mission of Mr Redmond," and those can be learnt from the letter addressed by me to the president and members of the Hibernian Society, they are not such as I seek to impose upon any of my Irish diocesans. I regret extremely that your statements about the pastoral letter addressed by me to the clergy, and about the difference of views between myself and them, and about their intentions to disregard my suppositious pastoral utterances, should have appeared, especially at a moment when a misapprehensioh may give rise to misunderstandings. These statements are untrue. Yon have made me pose in an attitude of English versus Irish, an attitude which I deprecate, an attitude which is most offensive both to myself and many Catholilc Irish who read the Star and an attitude in fine most alien to my wishes, and the sympathies of my heart.” It is understood that the letter referred to in the above is a very lengthly epistle setting forth the Bishop’s reasons for advising the Society to refrain from taking any steps in support of Mr Redmond’s missions. The Hibernian Society adopted a resolution thanking Bishop Luck for his letter, but drawing his attention; to the Society’s rule excluding all political matters from discussion by the Society.
