WAVERLEY.

(from our correspondent.) Monday. A special meeting of the Wairoa Highway Board was held on Saturday, 10th inst. Present : Messrs Johnston, Howie, Aiken and Chairman. Tenders received for Wairoa Bridge approach : J. W. Hughes, £l6 10s; S. Lever, £ls ; D. Herlihy, £ls. Resolved, That Mr Herlihy’s tender be accepted. Letter read from Commissioner of Crown Lands Patea, re deferred payment moneys. Resolved, That tenders be called for repairs on Motoroa and Richardson road to close on Monday, 19th inst at 12 noon, expenditure not to exceed £SO. The meeting then adjourned. Mr F. R. Jackson held his monthly sale on Saturday. There was a fair attendance but buyers were few. A picnic in connection with the Waverley Sunday School was held on Friday last in a paddock kindly lent for the occasion by Mr James Dickie. There was a large gathering of both young and old who all seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. A dance was held in the evening in Mr A. Aiken’s barn, and kept up till the small hours of the morning.

I am sorry to have to record the departure from our district of Mr and Mrs Seed, who left on Saturday last for Wellington. Mr Seed has for some three years been in charge of the Waverley branch of the Bank of New Zealand, and since his arrival has made a host of friends in the district. Mrs Seed will be especially missed in musical circles ; her talents being too well known to need any comment. I understand Mr Seed is to take charge of some other agency, but am not at present aware of the locality.
