(per press association.) AUCKLAND, March 9. Steps are already being taken in Auckland to give Mr Redmond, the Land Leaguer, a good reception by JKose favourable to leagues. Mr J. A. Pond, the Provincial Analyst, and Mr Oheeseman, Curator of the Auckland Museum, have tested the large Raglan diamond, and are satisfied as to its genuineness. The only doubts they have now are as to the locality whence it was obtained. It is now rumoured that there are discoveries of diamonds in Whangarei and Hokianga Counties. WELLINGTON, March 9. At the-Hon. C. S. Bromley’s second lecture on “ The English in Ireland,” ast night, Sir W. Fitzherbert occupied the chair. In acknowledging a vote of thanks moved by Bishop Redwood and seconded by the -Mayor, Sir William said that reference had been made to his having travelled some distance and endured fatigue in order to preside, but he could assure them- he would cheerfully travel a thousand times the distance, if by doing so he could assist in obtaining for Ireland an Irish Parliament. HOKITIKA, March 9. A man named G. Collier, one of Murray’s survey party, on the Upper Kokatahi, was drowned yesterday through the upsetting of a boat. There were tour men in the boat. Three were found standing on a rock in the centre of the Kokatahi River, with the water boiling around them. They were rescued. Collier’s body is not yet found.

Much disgust is felt here at the action of the Westland Education Board in permitting certain Committees to withdraw votes given for vacancies on the Board, and substitute others. This Was effected, in order to prevent Southern members being returned. Xiitigation is threatened.

An elderly man named, James Watson fell down dead in a lodginghouse today. The new Theatre Royal, erected at a cost of over £3OOO by Mr Moss Jonas, will shortly be opened. Its arrangements are said to be second to none in the colony. The weather continues favourable to harvesting, and, allowing for all damage done, the yield of first-class wheat will still be equal to that of last season. DUNEDIN, March 9. At the New Zealand University Senate to-day, Sir G. M. O’Rorke moved that the Edinburgh University be requested to grant the same privileges in regard to the study of medicine, to Auckland University as was granted to Otago. After a long discussion the motion was carried by a majority of one. The Senate also carried a resolution, expressing gratification at the establishment of Auckland University, and expressing a hope that one would also be established at Wellington.
