LONDON, March 5. • In the House of Commons to-day Mr Gladstone, replying 'to a question, stated that it was not possible to fix, until after the Kas ter recess, a date upon which the debate on the Affirmation in lien of Oath Bill could commence. Dr Thornton, Bishop of Ballarat, speaking at the Mansion House to-day, made an urgent appeal to the English public for support to carry on the work in his diocese. March 6. In reply to a question put him in the House of Commons, Mr Gladstone stated that the British troops will bo withdrawn from Eyypt when the purposes for which they were sent there have been achieved, and added that it is not possible at the present time to fix a date for withdrawal.
(Received March 8, 9 p.ra.) A good demand was again experienced at to-day’s wool auction. The catalogue comprised 13,000 bales. A severe "gale^’accompanied' by a heavy fall of snowj has been experienced over the greater part of England. Much damage has been-caused on land by the wind and snow drifts,-, and many disasters at sea are loported, owing to the severity of the gale which raged along the coasts. It is reported that Sir John Henry Lcfroy will assume the’Governorship of Ceylon for d year, pending the arrival of Sir Arthur Gordon. - ’ Intelligence is to hand from Paris that .' there is e very reason to believe that Byrne, who was recently arrested under .extradition warrant, charged with complioily iu the -Irish conepinicies, will be at once released by the French rr: (Received March-9, 1 a.m.) p -e’ March 8. In the House of Commons to-day the Bill, forbidding the use of pigeons at shooting matches, was read a second time.
