WANGANUI RACES. ‘ FIRST DAY—THURSDAY. The weather .was glorious but the attendance was not so large as on previous years. The, following are the results of the running : . 1 Wanganui Derby, of 100 sovs, added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs each for starters, distance, miles : colts, Bst lOlbs ; fillies and geldings, Bst 51 bs ; closed with 31 subs. For this event twelve horses came to the post, Last Chance, True Blue and the Orphan having been scratched. A good deal of time was lost in effecting a start and after several attempts they were got off fairly well together. Fame at once took the lead, and held it for the first quarter mile, when Maid of Eccleston was pulling on her, followed by Landseer and Denbigh. The field hold well together coming into the straight. Past the grand stand Denbigh had the and lead Hipporina was also coming forward. Within half a mile from homeFamehadagaincorneto the front and on entering the straight the second time Gem put on a spurt, and threatened to assume the lead. The excitement became intense, but it was only for a moment, and it was evident that Fame, who was ridden splendidly', had it all her own way, although threatened by Parefa who came in a good second, with Landseer about two lengths behind, Mystery alongside, and:the field following in a rush. The race was won by about a length, and the race was a most exciting one from start to finish. Time —2min 47 l-sth see. Hayward’s d g Orphan, aged, 6st 121b (Hayward) ... ... 0 St. Clair, Dan, and Sincerity were scratched. The flag fell to a good start, and the field went easily away, Hailstorm leading. Past the stand Buzzard was to the fore, Sincerity pulling up at a rapid pace, but again falling away. Buzzard maintained the lead by a length throughout the second round, and until within the last quarter mile of reaching the post, Armourer followed a second a good part of the way, and King Quail was steadily improving his ground, followed up by Fame. The excitement was intense, as the field entered the straight, King Quail assuming the lead and running strongly. He won by about three lengths, and* the result was received with cheers. Buzzard was second, and Fame a close third. Time, 4miu. 12 4-sth sec. Sapling Stakes of 60 sovs ; for two-year olds ; distance, |-raile ; Derby weights Mr J, Stevens’s b f Waiureka ... ... : 1 Mr R, Tancred’s Consul ... ... 2 Mr S. Powell’s Leonessa ... ... 3 Flying Handicap, of 125 sovs ; second horse to receive 15 sovs out of the stakes ; 1 mile and a distance. Mr W. H. Chitham’s b g Dan (Taylor) 1 Mr S Powell’s b m Hinemoa (McCormick) 2 Mr A. J. Keith’s hr g Constellation ... . : (Williams) 3 A hack race, won by Mr Dune's Scud, brought the day’s racing to a close. TO-DAY’S RACING. The weather was splendid for the second day’s sport. 1600 people were on the course. Maiden Plate, of 60 sovs, H miles. Leonata, Bst 21 bs, ... ' ... 1 Parera, 7st 131bs, ... ... 2 Landseer, 7st 131 bs, ... ... 3 Leonata led for the last half of the distance winning by about a length. She was desperately pushed for the last quarter of a mile by Parera and Landseer, who came in second almost a dead heat. Time, 2min 47 2-ssecs. Handicap Hurdles, of 75 sovs, miles. Reform, list ... ... 1 Lady Bab, lOst 21b ... 2 Dlnuleen, 10st ... .. 3 Diomides 12st, Parnell lOst 71b, and New Year lOst 51b were scratched. Reform led till within three-quarters of a mile from homo, when Banshee came to the front, but fell at the second last hurdle, Reform again taking , the lead and winning by two lengths. Time—4min 53 2-sth secs.
Stakes Handicap of 250 sovs, 2 miles. Blue Gown led for the first round,-and passed'by ’Buzzard, who in turn led till within a quarter of a mile; from the .post,i when King Quail passed and won by 5 lengths.
