' At.the annual meeting of the Standard Company, the chairman, in his address,, said that.the year’s, income: exceeded 5 the previous one by £4500; Which was very satisfactory considering the reduction of rates and the fact that the company’s operations had not been extended during the year. The present competition was most demoralising, and only ,those connected with the business could realise to what extent want of principle * guided certain competitors to secure premiums at all hazardSb - In many cases the company was obliged to let business pass rather than accept risks which left no reasonable prospect of profit. The directors- are considering the propriety of resuming insuring hulls;
