WANGANUI RIVER AND BAR .

Ifo-day's-Chronicle says : —“The present state of the river and of the bar 'seems to inflict a miinber of disagreeable adventures upon the steamers trading here. The'Tui had to wait several hours bn Saturday outside the bar, waiting for a favourable signal to enable her to cross. About 2 o’clock she took the bar, and stuck for several minutes on the fop of it. Getting over at last she proceeded, gaily up the river till she got to,jthe. town end of the channel, dredged, through the flats, and here, at a spot a little beyond tiie unfortunate- schooner Artriie Hill (.which has been sticking on the flats some days), the Tub came to" a’ standstill again for a considerable time. By means of'a rope from the schooner the steamer slewed round, changed positions, and after a good deal of delay managed to get up to the wharf at 4 o’clock, the passengers being in that unhappy frame of mind which we do not care to describe. The Manawatu was and is still more unfortunate. She left the wharf, bound for Westport, with several passengers on board, about five o clock on Saturday afternoon, but stuck on the flats just about the very spot occupied by the Tui two hours previously. Yesterday afternoon the Manawatu got off and went steaming away seawards, but, on passing Castlecliflr, Pilot Irvine sung out to know what water she was drawing. The answer was 7 feet 4 inches, and the pilot replied that there, was, just the same depth as on the bar. The Manawatu had therefore to return to the -wharf,'where she now lies but will try the bar again to-day.
