KAKARAMEA.
(from our correspondent.) i Friday. Yesterday, our township looked a; little livelier than it has done of late, owing to Mr F. R. Jackson’s stock sale atthe yards. The weather was all that could be desired, and to this may be? attributed the good attendance-. There was a little improvement in the price of sheep, the bidding, however being rather dull for cattle. 110 head of cattle were yarded, and the bulk of those sold under the hammer. The sheep, of which 1300 were penned, were all sold. Prices were as follows :—Cows and calves, £3 5s ; heifers, £2 12s 6d ; 2;ycarfold steers, £3 10s ; fat cows, £4 15s. Fat owes (heavy weights) and wethers brought 14s; 6d ; good useful sheep; '9s 6d ; half-tatted Wethers, 10s ; old ewes, 4s 9d, and shorn lambs, 4s. To-day Mr s Jackson conducts the sale of Mr Martyn’s stock at Manaia, and on Saturday he will hold a sale., of rams at Hawora. i
~M O qr{ J ocql: h pst, Mr J. O’Sullivan, seems to be blessed with unusually prolific stock. Three of his cows within the past three months have produced twin, calves. A. few- sucli animEils-aslliosc would soon stock a 1000 acre paddock. The Railway work is progressing. A gang of men are emploj’ed at the Kakaramea Station putting sidings through and alongside of the Goods’ Shed. Platelaying, which, has been.discontinued for a tim Vowing ’ to ‘ the large filling-in at Mr Burke’s farm not. being finished, will be re-commenced in about ten days’ time ; and the contractor will be enabled to push on without further obstruction right to the Manutahl, Station; It is quite refreshing now to hear the whistle of the locomotive and the whirr of truck Wheels as they pass up and down with their load of ballast. It is to be hoped that the day is not far distant when the line will be open for passenger traffic. We may look forward tq thisjif things go on as they are at preseht, I suppose in about_thr.ee.or four months. . - ~ r? -
The B.oilingHdown Works are nowin full swing, and are well worth, a, visit. Thinking so the other day, Tpaid one and was pleased’to SeeJibiv‘methodically and cleanly .operations were carried on. The new method of running-' off Si the - tallow from .the.top of the digester is a vast improvement, as . it renders, the tallow beautifully'cblbtired and free’from specks. It is expected, that a considerable number of"sheep ? wilf be !! put’ r tfirbfagh ; fhis'% £ eason,
