SUPPOSED MURDER.
We take the following from yesterday’s Wanganui 'Herald At the E.M, Court this morning Phoebe Ycitch was charged before Mr Lifflton, J.P., that she did on or about the 20lli Fobrun.ry. .feloniously, wilfully, -nnd nf malice aforethought kill and murder one Phoebe Veitch. . Inspector James asked for a remand, on the ground? that there would be an inquest on the body of the child on the following? day, at which accused would be charged with the alleged offence. Mr Liffiton suggested offering bail. Inspector James said he would object and the, further hearing of the charge was then remanded for three days. : The charge arises out of the finding of the dead body of a, little girl on the bench, near the cable house, To which reference has already been made in our columns. The child remained unclaimed and unidentified until last night',iwhemscmethin'g came to the ears of the police, which led them to make further enquiries, resulting in the arrest of' the accused, and the entering of the present charge against her. It is understood the police have worked up a strong case, hut of course they are very reticient on the matter. In Court this morning ; accused presented a miserable appearance, and she has a curious hist ory. Suffering-from ’a cancer on her nose, her face is covered with a thick veil. She is of small statue, and has a difficulty in her speech, due ,to the. .cancerous affliction. In Court she also said she had great difficulty in hearing. She was very quiet in her demeanour, and presented-no appearance of excitement. Accused is 23 years of age, and is said to have been married, to a man named Ycitch, who left her two years ago, She came to town from Fcilding only a fortnight ago, and brought with her two children, a
four yerrs in May next. The latter is the—child whose body was found on the beach. Accused also leaves a girl aged niiie years at Feilding, Her first child was born when she was only fourteen years of age. The child found is evidently the daughter of ,a coloured man, supposed to be a Chinaman, but we understand accused states that its father was an Anglo-Indian, When accused - was arrested she admitted the parentage of the child, and gave the story that on Monday night she went down to the wharf,, and the little girl, ; fell over into the river, but she did not like to say anything about'it.
