A number of spectators were on the platform, but there was no demonstration beyond cordial cheers as the train moved off. SAD DROWNING CASE. (per press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb 25. This afternoon, at Sumner, the only surviving son of Mr C. J. Colborne Veel, Secretary of the Board of Education, was drowned. Deceased, who was about 14 years old, with another boy,
the son of Mr George Hart, of the Press newspaper, got into a punt at Burns’s jetty. The punt got loose, and was drifted by the tide, which was running very fast. There was one oar and; half a paddle in the punt, and the boys tried to row to shore. The oar dropped; overboard. Deceased, asked Hart to! jump in and recover it. Hart was unable to swim. Deceased jumped in, and; soon appeared to be drowning. Hart whistled to a dog, which swam to deceased and caught him by the collar of his coat. The current was too strong,; and Veel was drowned. Hart, in the punt, drifted some distance, and appeared likely to bo carried to sea, but was rescued by Mr Monck off Shag Rock. The body was recovered two hours later. Mr Yeel recently lost another son. TWO CLERKS DROWNED. (PER press association.) ■ AUCKLAND, This day. Two clerks in the employ of the Union .Steamship Company’s at Russell, were drowned there bn Saturday even-; ing, through the capsizing of a boat while out for a pleasure sail. The names were G. Bayley, and M. S. Sawkins. The latter only 18 years (? months) ago insured in the Government office for; £SOO. A seaman named Anderson, also in the boat, was rescued in an exhausted condition.-
