Entries bearing Saturday’s post mark may yet come in. - DUNEDIN CUP. Welcome Jack started first favourite at 2 to I, Sir Modred and Lady Emma 3 to 1, There was a lot of fiddling at the start, Sir Modred jumping about very unkindly, and once all but Lady Emma went away. When they‘did get away it was to a- good start. The Jilt at once went off with a commanding lead, followed by Adamant, Sir Garnet,- and Welcome Jack, the others ini a cluster, with Sir Modred last. The Jilt increased her lead to four lengths, and once round was still leading, with Adamant close up, and no great alteration' among the others, except; that Sir Garnet was finding the pace too hot, and, dropping hack. Sir Modred,* Lady Emma, Salvage, and King Quail now began to go up, and towards the back of the course, The Jilt fell back, and Adanlanttook the lead. Salvage how came to the fore; and began to challenge Adamant, and the race from thencehome was entirely between these two. Sir Modred and Lady Emma made their effort coming towards the. straight, but none of them could keep it up, and Welcome Jack fell back, King Quail'and The Poet in advance of the others, and followed the two leaders up the straight. Derrett, on Salvage, whipped and rode his horse all he knew, but never got nearer than three-quarters of a length to Adamant, both horses passing the post much distressed. The time was 3m,in 54sec—a second faster than the time of any previous year. The betting about Adamant in the paddock was 100 to 5 against him. The lucky investors in the totalisators netted capital dividends. In one were 7on Adamant out of 470, and on the other 6 out of 286 ; both of these were £2 shares. The £1 totalisator showed 5 on him out of £348. Mr Fleming, part owner of Adamant, is stated to have won about £3OOO. He had one wager of £IOOO to £lO since the weights appeared.
