LONDON SEED TRADE
Messrs John Shaw and Sons, of 31 Mark Lane, London, report through their agent, JVIr Leonard W, Bhike, of Christchurch..
that the market during the month ending December 28th, was, on the whole, quiet, but extreme firmness prevailed for every description of farm seeds ; this is to bo accounted for by their apparent scarcity, more especially of fine qualities. American advices reported their markets dearer for Red Clover, owing to large shipments to the Continent, and there is more doing in French Reds. The few samples of homegrown seed were eagerly bought, as they appeared at extremely high figures. More attention was being paid to White Clover, and Alsyke was quiet, but firm. Foreign Italian still tended upwards, as also did Trefoil. Canary was considerably higher, and Hemp was very firm. The Imports of Clover and Grass Seeds into the United Kingdom during the month of November 1882, were 33,082cwt., value £65,472, against 16,454cwt., value £32,238 for November 1881.
