EXPORTING WESTPORT COAL.

(per press association) WESTPORT, This day. Sailed—Barque Celostia, for Noumea, New Caledonia. She takes coal for the French Messageries line of steamers. If the shipment is approved of, a regular trade will probably be opened. FIRE IN WELLINGTON. (per press association.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. At a quarter to 3 o’clock this morning a fire broke out in Jamieson’s grocery store on Lambton Quay, and obtained a firm hold before the Brigade arrived or water could be procured. Jamieson’s shop and Madame de Lau- ’ nay’s modiste were entirely destroyed, and all the stock removed from McCredie’s, ironmonger, which was once or twice actually alight. A Strong north-west wind was blowing, but fortunately next to Jamieson’s was a brick house, Whitaker’s, bookseller. This stopped the progress of what would otherwise certainly have been a very extensive fire. The origin of the fire is attributed to rats gnawing matches. The two buildings which were burned were owned by Jacob Joseph, and were insured as follows in the Colonial office : —Jamieson’s £1000; De Lnnney’s, £SOO. Both these amounts arc rc-insnrcd. McJT Credie’s shop, which is only slightly damaged, is owned by Mr Lowes, of Masterton, and is insured. Madame de Launoy’s stock is covered with an insurance of £SOO, but Jamieson’s and McCredie’s stock is uninsured, the former’s being almost completely destroyed by fire.; the latter is only slightly damaged. Lowes building is insured for £ISOO.
