(Received Feb. 9, 3 p.m.) LONDON, Fob, 7. The Sorrento’s cargo of frozen meat, consisting of 5,838 carcases of mutton, arrived in splendid condition. A deputation of the Free Church of Scotland waited upon Earl Derby, Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reference to the New Hebrides and Poly nesian labour question. In reply to various speakers, Earl Derby repudiated the idea that England intended to annex the New Hebrides, and expressed a hope that an agreement would be come to with France by which the independance of natives of that group would be duly respected. He further promised to endeavour to' regu-j-late the labour traffic in Polynesia, and necessary to stop it altogether. (Received Feb 9, 2.50 p.m.) LONDON, Feb 7. Earl Spencer, Viceroy of Ireland, returned to-day to Dublin. The Dannbian commission met today, bnt, owing to the absence of Mnsurns Pashn, Turkish Ambassador, the meeting was adjourned. H. E. Knight, Lord Mayor of London, has refused the request which has been made to him that he should start a fund for the relief of prevailing distress in Ireland. LONDON, Feb, 8. A terrific gale has been experienced on the English coasts, and numerous wrecks, accompanied by loss of life is reported. Intelligence is to hand that the steamer Venmuro Castle, foundered in a heavy gale in the Bay of Biscay, and 33 persons have been drowned.
