PATE A V. HAW ERA.

• The return match between Pa tea and Hawera was played on the Domain Ground on Saturday, the four innings occupying the allotted time, from shortly after ten in the morning until nearly half-past six in the evening. It m;>y be remembered that in the first match Hawera won by seven, but, on this occasion, they had quite an easy victory, being, some 88 to the good. The visitors had an undoubtedly strong team, and one which might creditably have represented any district, though Fred. Bayly, one of its best men, was regarded more as a White Cliffs than a Hawera man. The ground was exceedingly lively, and Hawera on first going to the wickets commenced to drive the ball very freely. Riddiford especially, getting well set, and batting very nicely. When he had put twenty together he managed to slip the ball into the hands of Jacomb, who was wicket-keeping, but the umpire, Hannah, gave it as not out, admitting that he did not see what became of the ball. 'Hawera men frankly admitted the catch, but the umpire’s dictum was irrevocable, and Riddiford made a respectable innings of 52, and Wanklyn, who was batting steadily but strong, 25. The bowling was inferior, and when Doneglme had bowled five overs without a maiden, he was taken off. Dixon’s balls were simply unplayable ; they were trundled slowly along the ground, and the batsman could only block. The top scorer of Patea in its first innings was Doneglme who made seventeen, and Jacob got such a knocking about with the ball through being struck by it three different times that he could only limp off the ground. Hawera in their second innings obtained 72, of which 24 were contributed by Moore, who batted splendidly, and the catch of the day was made by Read off Mason. He had twenty yards run to the ball. Patea having 128 to make to win on going to the wickets, at five o’clock, for the second innings, there was not much thought of success. Norman and Read were sent in, and, as the latter went in for loose slogging, his bails were taken after he had made six. Norman retired for one, and Jacob and Doneglme got together. On account of Jacob having hurt his leg Dixon ran as his substitute, and, what most of the onlookers anticipated, occurred, Doiiegbue forgot the substitute and was fun out. None of the playersunade a stand, Jacomb being top'of the list with eight, and the innings closed lor 39 The detailed scores-arq subjoined:
