PURSUIT OF A RUNAWAY LOVER AND ROMANTIC MARRIAGE.
A young man, respectably connected, employed as a sinter and plasterer ,in Ayrshire, fell in love with one Ayr’s “ bonnie lassies a buxom, well-doing girl—engaged as a domestic servant with a gentleman of high position in the town. The attachment was reciprocated by the young woman, who, unfortunately, loved not wisely,'bat too well,” and became “ a mother, yet no wife.” Why they did not get wedded does not seem quite clear. It was said that the youth was fluxions to marry the girl, but that for some unexplained reason she declined. .Be that ns it.may, the young man registered the child in his own name, and continued to contribute, regularly fur its support. Recently, about a year having passed, he dost his employment, and the young woman learned that he had taken out a passage for America-, and was to sail in a few days .from Glasgow. vShe was naturally alarmed at the prospect of her child being deserted and - left .to be supported from her own limited means. Her master and mistress had always taken a warm interest in her case, and in the present emergency they sent her to a friend in Govan who could direct her how to proceed to prevent the flight of her quondam lover. case : was 'entrusted to a sheriff’s officer, who, accompanied by the girl, proceeded to the sheriff and obtained a fugee . warrant for the young man’s apprehension. The officer discovered that lie was to sail in the Anchoria on Monday, but every effort to .find out the young man himself was fruitless Having got a hint that he had paid, or was about to pay a farewell visit to Ayr, the officer proceeded on Saturday night to St. Enoch ■ Station tb get the last train thither, when he luckily encountered the object of his pursuit, who had just returned from Ayr, and took him into custody.- A telegram was despatched to the girl’s master informinghim of the and requesting instructions,; to which a reply was received next morning directing ’ the officer! to call at the office of a lawyer to j whom he was writing to take charge of the case. It; being ~now top late to proceed further, the officer was under the necessity of finding accommodation for himself and his prisoner in a hotel till Monday. ’ The girl, who h.;id hitherto; accompanied the officer.in his inquiries, was also accommodated itvthe hotel. On Monday morning the party called on the lawyer, and afterwards proceeded to ; the sheriff’s chambers Meanwhile.the captive lover had offered to end the -matter by marrying the girl if she would consent. She was now apparently quite ready to ’accept his proposal; and, accordingly, when they appeared Before his Lordship, and.the position of matters was explained, little remained to be done except to unite the pair in the bonds of wedlock. After the ceremony, every one being pleased at so happy a consummation of what .had seemed likely to prove a very’ disagreeable affair, the officer accompanied the' newlj-married. couple to the hotel .where they had lodged, and explained to the proprietor tfie - new relationship of the parlies.
