KAKARAMEA.
From our Correspondent.] Wednesday. Harvesting is now being proceeded with energetically. Both the Peering and the Sarnuelson machines are doing good work, the former, however, seems to be the “ pet.” Boiling down at the Woodside establishment will rc-cornmcnce about the Ist of February. Mr Robb, the proprietor, who is now carrying on the fellmongery business on the same premises, is having all the requisite plant put in thorough working order. We may soon, therefore, be enabled (O ! blessing to paterfnmiliases) to indulge in legs of mutton, pickled tongues, &c., &c., at prices which no one can grumble at. I am informed that Mr R. Aldrige has taken the butchery now carried on by Mr Ludlam, near the Whamcliffe Hotel. This is, it is to be hoped, a sign that our population is on the increase. A slaughter yard is to be erected for him on Mr Hunter’s property near the Boiling Down works. The public meeting to receive balancesheet and report on the affairs of the Institute, and to elect a new committee was held last night at the Town Hal!. The Secretary read the following report : “ Report of the Kakaramea Institute, for the year ending 1882. The Chairman of .the Library Committee. Sir, — I beg to submit the following report on the Institute for the year ending December 31st, 1882. The present Committee on taking office, .found themselves rather heavily handicapped by debts which had been contracted during the year ending December, 1881 ; and, although the sum of £ll was handed over to the Treasurer, Mr Glover, it was found necessary to discharge a debt of £6 7s due to Mr Kenworthy, and another of £9 18s 7d to Mr Willis. This, of course, considerably reduced (lie finances during the year. With regard to the contents of the Library, I may state that 109 new works have been added, showing that the Committee have done their best to provide out of their slender means for the needs of their subscribers, the number of which during the past quarter has been increased slightly. It seems, Indeed, a pity that more residents do not avail themselves of the benefits derived from such an institution. In conclusion, I would state that an application has been duly made for a portion of the Government grant to Public Libraries, which, it is to be hoped, svill prove successful. —I have &c., R. Temple Brown.” The balance-sheet shewed receipts from nil sources for the year £57 16s Bd. Expenditure £53 7s lOd ; balance in hand £4 8s lOd. It was resolved that report and balance-sheet as read should be adopted. Resolved on the morion of Mr Jay that the following gentlemen he appointed a committee for the present year: Messrs Brown, Clover, McKenzie, Slater and Sullivan. Mr Glover was appointed chairman and Mr Brown secretary,. A vote of thanks to the chairman, Mr Clover, and Mr Brown, secretary, was accorded for their past services, and the meeting adjourned. It is satisfactory to find that we are again getting a shoemaker to reside here. Mr McLaren has taken a shop in the High street, and intends opening shortly with a good stock of boots and shoes from the celebrated stores of Hannah and Co. Ho is also piepared to undertake jobs of saddlery, &c., and being provided with machines of the best type he will doubtless receive a share of the public support.
