COLONIAL GOLD.
The Tariff Commission sitting at Melbourne have elicited some lads which seem to point to the conclusion that unless the jewellers are sharply looked after Colonial gold will soon be classed in the same category as the Canadian article and other rubbish, which the Exhibition made us only too familiar with. Evidence was given, showing that a widespread system exists of manufacturing l! colonial gold ” articles of a very inferior quality to that which the public generally are supposed to obtain. “ Colonial gold ” jewellery, well known by its rich colour, is often a delusion and a snare, Unscrupulous dealers palm off, instead of 18-carat, a mixture of metal in which, the real quality is.perhaps not over 8 or 10carat, ami Mr Schafer, a manufacturer, states that the public only find it out when endeavouring to realise, on soiling their purchases. Mr Aronson, of the firm of Rosenthal and Aronson, manufacturing jewellers, agreed with Mr Schafer that a u ball, mark” should be at once established, similar to that used in England, so as to protect the public and the honest makers.
