O ; (per press association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 12. A bnshman, named Cunningham, attempted suicide at Northern Wairoa by stabbing himself in the neck and breast. He said (hat his mate Patterson, who was drowned some time back in the Northern Wairoa, had instigated him to do it. He had been drinking. In Chambers Mr Justice Gillies stated that, in cases where debtors conceal any of their creditors’ names by omitting them from the schedule, and obtain their discharge without the omission being repaired, the concealed liability holds good, and the creditor may seek to recover when he can.
George Olsen has been committed for trial for attempted murder of his wife, Elizabeth Olsen. WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. At the Police Court to-day George Smith was charged on remand with pairing the unlawful game of “Fan” on (he Ueatheote Racecourse on the l 2(hh December last. Mr Holmes, who appeared for accused, said that, after looking carefully into the law of the ca so, he found that under the New Zealand Act his client had been legally guilty of an offence, and that the Heathcote Racecourse, though private property, was a place where the public assembled on race days, and therefore he would admit that defendant had been guilty of a legal offence, though at the time he thought he was keeping within the law. Inspector Pender said accused had been cautioned by the police to desist before be was arrested. The Bench would regard the car.e as a test one, and deal leniently with accused. The San Francisco correspondent of the Otago Daily Times thinks it quite probable that the frozen meat trade from New Zealand may be extended to that country. TIMARU, Jan. 12. At the Resident Magistrates Court to-day Robert Inncs was committed for trial at the Supreme Court for wilfully setting fire to a stack of hay valued at £l5O, the property of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company. A young man named McDonald, who was working on the Fairlie Creek railway extension, was severely crushed between two trucks yesterday, and was removed to the hospital. OAMARU, Jan. 12. A meeting of merchants was held here to-day, to consider the railway tariff. After discussing the tariff from a variety of standpoints, it was resolved — u That a copy of the comparative tables that had been compiled by Mr James Aitken and Mr Evans, together with a report from the chairman, be forwarded to the Chambers of CommercrA at Invercargill and Timaru; and those bodies be asked to co-operate with Oamaru in endeavouring to secure a rectification of the inconsistency and injustice of the railway tariff, and to make any suggestions in regard to the subject which they might deem desirable with a view to taking united and prompt action.
