THE HARBOUR BOARD.
That sleepy body, the Harbour , Board, ought to have held two meetings to-day. Noon was the time for the annual meeting, but at that hour the Secretary was the only person in attendance. At two o’clock it was the same, but shortly afterwards Mr Aitchison put in an appearance and was followed by Sir Peacock who found to his disgust that he had had his ride for nothing. This is the second time that a quorum has failed to be present, and we must express our disapprobation at such apathy. The Harbour Board is the most important body in the district, and the improvement of the harbour is a vital quesf ion. Yet, what chance is there of any work being done when even the Board are too indifferent to meet. Stagnation prevails everywhere, and on all sides the opinion is expressed that unless “ something” is done to the Harbour, times will be bad indeed. A nice prospect truly ! We hope that the new Board—if ever there is one—will attend to its business in a little more energetic manner than th e present one does. [Just as we were going to press we learnt that after a tremendous amount of hunting up, the Secretary managed to get a quorum together and proceed to business.]
