♦ (per press association.) DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The Papakaio murder case is fixed for the 22nd lost.' Returns show that the colony is steadily gaining in population by immigration. From Isi January to 30ih November, the net gain to the colony was 281*6 ‘persons. The balances in favour of the colony were made up as follows :—United Kingdom, 2102 : Australian colonics, 488 ; other places, 6. A dummy engine, carrying six persons, plunged info Niagara River on Sept. 29, one of the draws of the International Bridge between Black Rock and Fort Erie having been opened to allow a steam yacht to go through. The engineer was instantly killed. A Canadian farmer had his sky 11 crushed,, and died within an hour. The conductor, a gentleman, and two ladies wore rescued, although seriously cut and bruised. The bridge is 30ft above the river, and the water is 14 feet deep at the place whore the accident occurred. The current is very strong, and the escape of those rescued is miraculous, as all wore carried to the bottom with the dummy “ Atlas." in the "World, thus makes mention of the pet jockey of the day : Everybody is happy to know that " Fred Archer is completely above the world, and has, from his own investments, or rather those which Lord Falmouth has counselled him to make, an independent income which would enable him to retire to-morrow, and live handsomely ever after. The famous jockey's marriage with pretty Miss Nellie Dawson is to take place about Christmas. The new house for the happy pair is nearly finished. It is beyond ’’ the Duchess’ " on the same side of flic road as Hammond’s and is of red brick with stone dressing, a handsome dwelling, with conservatory. kitchen garden, hothouses, walls for fruit, shrubbery, lawn, and stables, all complete, even to the mastiff. There is, however, a skeleton in a closet, or rather there will be ; for there is now titling up a perfect Turkish bath for Archer to reduce himself to as nearly a perfect skeleton as may be. "
