It is announced that Lord Edmund Fitzmaurioe, M.P. for Caine, has been appointed Parliamentary Under - Secretary for Foreign Affairs, vice Sir Charles Dilke, appointed President of the Local Government Board: PARIS, Jan. 1. Gambetta died of erysipelas and pyasmia. His remains will bo publicly buried at the expense of the State. (Received Jan. 3, 1 a.m.) BERLIN, Jan, 1. The German press, commenting upon the effect that the death of M. Gambetta will have upon European politics generally, expresses an opinion that the event may be considered ns a guarantee that the policy of Franco will tend towards the preservation of peace. Floods in the valley of the Rhino have risen rapidly. Five villages have been completely destroyed, and thousands of peasantry are completely destitute. INTERPROYINCIAL. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, Jan 2. A large wooden building in Stuartstreet was destroyed by fire'yesterday afternoon. The house was owned by Dr Stenhouse, and tenanted by Mrs Russell, who kept a lodging-house, and was the only person in the building when the fire was discovered. The Brigade saved the adjoining buildings. The furniture was under-insured. A mortgagee held a policy of £7OO in the Victorian Company on the building. The Caledonian games to-day were again attended by several thousands of people. The principal attraction was the border wrestling, which Strong, the present champion, won after an interesting contest with Robertson, the Maori. This day. A lad, named Boag, aged twelve years, was drowned in the Shag river while bathing. INVERCARGILL, Jan 2. The workshop of Mr Sergeant, North Invercargill, cabinet-maker, was burned down to-day, the building and stock all being destroyed. The insurance is £3OO in the New Zealand office. WELLINGTON, Jan. 1. Yesteiday some children were playing on a waggon on the railway wharf when a boy eight years old, son of policeSergeant Ready, fell off, and the wheels passed over his neck. Death was instantaneous. Jan. 2. A proclamation in the Gazette fixes the date of the sittings in the Supreme Court for the Wanganui district. Sittings for the trial of criminal and civil cases, and of causes under the Divorce and Matrimonial Causes Act, will be held at the Caurt House, Wanganui, to commence on the following days at 11 a.m.: —Tuesday, April 241h ; Tuesday, October 23rd. Business in Chambers may be disposed of in the course of these sittings at such days and hours as the Judges may appoint. The Acting-Governor and Sir Julius Yogel left in the Te Anau for Lyttelton to) attend the opening of the dock. J It is understood that the vacant governorship of the Hokitika Gaol is about to be conferred on Mr James Donaldson, the senior warder of the Wellington Gaol. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 2. The body of the man Taylor, who was drowned at Sumner, was found on the New Brighton Beach on Sunday, almost unrecognisable. The weather is now oppressively hot and close.
