PATEA HARBOUR.
TO the editor. Sib, — Having traded to your port for the last six years, during which time I have taken the Bar many times, I can only say that before your breakwater was built, I could only take it with the wind S.E. ; on the other hand, since it has been Completed I have taken it some 10 or 12 times. I consider that steamers and sailing vessels have* a deal better chance of coming in safely now. At present sailing vessels can take the Bar with the wind east to west south about. You will at once plainly see that you have now fifteen more chances than previously. Now, I am perfectly confident that if the Harbour Board were to shift the Breakwater towards the Flagstaff, it would at once shift the channel, and ten to one form a spit down the centre. In conclusion, let me venture to offer a little advice. First, watch the Pilot closely by day, or his lights by night ; se condly, have a thorough good helmsman at the wheel—one that will not look over bis-shoulder at the rollers ; thirdly, have (icr vessel perfectly in command, either by s-V-nu and I will guarantee you Li Trusting yin? ■ i: l 1 rn- Yn me for occupying so much of your -Liable space I am, Sir, ANCIEN" i.
