MISCELLANEOUS .
. The Gippsland Mercury says Mr M, Mackintosh’s spirited speculation in chartering a ship, the fserapis, and making on his own account a shipment of horses, to the number 200 of, to India, has been as successful as all his friends hoped it would be. We have already had thfe pleasure of stating that the horses arrived with only a loss of 4 per cent., and we now learn that the men in charge have returned safely. The horses werfe old-at most satisfactory priceSj though the market was dull some 2000 horses being on hand when the Serapis arrived. But the horses were landed in such excellent condition, and were so -well suited to ; requirement, that they had the quickest sale ever accomplished. We tiriderstand that Mr Mackintosh will shortly ■make another shipment from Bushy Park.” Last session, it will be remembered, says the Post. Hon. members were treated to a song in .the House by the representative of Dunedin Centraland last evening, at Mr Levin s meeting at the Athenaeum, the audience were within an ace of being favoured with a song by the genial chairman, Mr Maginnity. After the vote of confidence in Mr Levin ■had been' enthusiastically agreed to, Mr Maginnity addressing that gentlefnan, said it afforded him great pleasure to convey to him the thanks of the meeting, because if there was one song which Mr Levin and he could join in with more appropriateness than another it was “When we were boys to-, gethcr.” This announcement was met, with loud cries of “ Sing it !” followed by continued applause. Mr Maginnity’s native modesty, however, compelled him to decline the honour. i ‘ Ihe publishers of a German novel scored a hit recently in the line of advertising. They had inserted-in most of the papers a notice stating that a certain, nobleman of means, anxious to obtain a wife, wanted one who resembled the description of the heroine in the novel named. Of coarse every marriageable woman who saw this announcement bought the novel to see how much she resembled the imaginary beauty referred to.
