WAVERLEY.

(from our correspondent.) Monday. Mr F, R. Jackson held Ins usual monthly sale on Frida}' last. There was a fair attendance of buyers. The prices realised were : Cows and calves, £3 10s to £4 16s ; cows averaged £4 4s ; 3-year-old steers, £5 10s ; yearling steers, £2 12s 6d. Almost the whole of the cattle entered were sold. Sheep were, however, not in demand, and although some fifteen hundred were entered, none were sold. A cricket match was played, on Saturday between the local club and Waitotara on the ground of the latter. The Waver ley team having won the tons, went first to the wickets, and put together the respectable total of ninety-seven, the highest scores being D. Coghill 43, which he obtained by really good play, and Fookes 14. Waitotara obtained in their first innings 32, and in (heir second 35, Unis leaving Waveriey the victors by one innings and 30 runs. The batting and long-stopping ol: D. Coghill were much admired The ordinary meeting of the Waveriey School Committee, was held on Thursday, December 14th. Present—Messrs Davis, Uair, McDonald, Muir, and Bridge (Chairman). On the motion of Mr Davis, seconded by Mr Muir, it was resolved —That (he Chairman procure paper for the teacher’s residence, end have the repapering done. The Chairman then laid the examination returns and the Inspector’s report before the Committee, Proposed by Mr Muir, seconded by Mr McDonald, and carried, —That the Committee thank the Hoard for forwarding a copy of the Inspector’s report upon the late examination, hilt feed that in consequence of the prevalence of measles in the district, the 'examination was not a fair test of the year’s work in the School and can therefore not bo a standard by which to judge whether good work has been done or pot. They think that if the inspector had complied with the request of the Committee to postpone the examination until the school refilled, more justice would have been done to all persons interested. A letter from Mr Scott, the master, having been read to the Committee it was resolved, ■“'That Mr Scott’s letter be forwarded to the Board with the previous resolution.” It was resolved, “ That ‘the Chairman write to Mrs Walkinton and Mr Faukner thanking them for the trouble they have taken in awarding prizes.
