The Patea Mail. Established 1875. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1882. NEWS OF THE DAY.

We are requested to state that the information in Regina v. Beamish has been withdrawn pending the term of imprisonment Mr Beamish is undergoing. Witnesses therefore need not attend- upon their present subpoenas. The attention of the Resident Magis-. trate’s. Court this morning was occupied by the hearing of the case Haraerton v Williamson. Mr Barton -appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Matthews for the defendant. The evidence was wearisome and uninteresting in the extreme, : and at the adjournment at one o’clock for lunch only the plaintiff and one witness had been examined. We would remind intending competitors that entries for the Caledonian Sports will close to-morrow evening at 9 o’clock, at Messrs Chadwick’s office. At the R.M. Court yesterday morning, before 0/ A. Wray, Esq., R.M., James O’Brien was charged on the information of Sergeant Donovan with having no visible lawful means of support. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. It appeared from the evidence of Mr Win. Taylor, tinsmith, that the accused had been loitering about his yard, and had been annoying his family. Accused said he had just come put of the hospital, and that owing to a bad foot he was unable to obtain work. The accused was discharged with a caution and was ordered to leave the town by Friday morning. Our Wavcrley correspondent writes : Tim now Road Boards and Comities Act Amendment Act, which come into operation on January Ist, 1883, considerably simplify the working of these local bodies, and specially offer facilities for doing away with either the Council or the Board. The ratepayers in this part of the.County, being about sick of County management, are talking of agitating for separation from the Patea County. It would be a good idea to call a public meeting and discuss so important a question, when, no doubt, some plan of action would be adopted to lessen the present evil.
