Government have announced their intention of appointing a Royal Commission to enquire.into the condition of affairs in the Western Pacific. The results obtained of the Transit of Venus from various parts of the world are deemed amply sufficient to enable the sun’s distance to be almost absolutely arrived at. General Sir Evelyn Wood sails for Egypt at an early date to take command of the rearganiscd Egyptian army. . Rumours are current here that the i four battalions of British troops now serving in Egypt will shortly be withdrawn, A bulletin issued this morning states that Mr Fawcett, the Postmaster-General, is suffering from severe hemorrhage, and is much weaker. (Received Dec. 12,1 a. m.) LONDON, Dec, 11. The Eight Hon. Earl Derby has accepted a seat in'the Cabinet, and will take office at an early date. It is understood that further changes in the constitution of the Ministry will be thereby entailed, and it is expected that a redistribution of the various portfolios will shortly be announced. Five of' the .prisoners who confessed to participation in the murder of the Joyce family at Maantrasna, and were duly found guilty and sentenced to death, have now had their sentences commuted • to penal servitude for life. The death sentence will be earned out in the case of the other prisoners. Intelligence to hand from Ireland states that despite the prohibition issued, a meeting of the National League was held yesterday at Loughrea, County Galway. The second warehouse occupied by Sillier and Fleming, which was burned down on Saturday night, formed part of a block situated in Wood. Street, between Addle Street and London Wall, which was the scene of the conflagration of the Bih instant. A fresh fire broke out among the still smouldering ruins. The flames spread rapidly, and before they could be got under a building and its contents were completely destroyed. ; .CAIRO, Dec 10. Mahmoud Fehrny and Yacomb Sami, who took a leading part hi the rebellion, have also been sentenced to exile.
