PATEA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
'H i- all Important cfiemtuiy of breaking op for the holidays, took place, in conmviion with the Pa lea District High School this morning. The scholars were in attendance at ten o’clock, and were in those joyous spirits characteristic to such occasions. The presentation of prizes was made by Mr Aitcheson, chairman of the school committee, who remarked that this was the fourth occasion on which he had distributed the prizes, and, as heretofore, he had much pleasure in complimenting them upon the work accomplished' during the past year. It might be considered an improvement on any former year. For his own part he should like to see every child get a prize, but that could not be. School work was like running a race, only those who were the foremost could hope to receive a prize. If prizes were given to all they would have no value. They had gone by results, regardless of names, so that no favour had been shown. They had done very well for the past year, and he could now say to the unsuccessful ones do not lose heart but try and produce better results next year. Probably some who had passed the sixth standard would be leaving the School altogether, and they must remember that wise people did not neglect education when they left school, but endeavored to acquire learning all their days. He then presented prizes as follows: Standard YI. Maximum marks, 820. 1 Kate Harden, 713; 2 Nina Hawken, 619. He congratulated the children on their success in the various examinations held during the last three years, their progress and exemplary conduct. A few years would show the nature of the training they had received in the school, (Applause.) The announcement of four weeks’ holiday concluded the proceedings.
