The Admiralty authorities have determined upon inviting tenders for the supply of New Zealand salt beef to* the British Navy, and are therefore calling for preliminary experimental shipmen's of ten.3oolb casks from each of the principal ports of this colony. If the expeiiment proves satisfactory as regards quality when compared with American meat, the Admiralty will make a second trial on a larger scale, and will invite a supply of 126,0001bs annually. WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Thomas Thompson and John Morgan were charged with having in their possession 40 gallons of whiskey, upon which the duty had not been paid. They were remanded till tomorrow. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 26. The Lyttelton Graving Dock will be opened by Sir James Prendergast next month. The body of James Crilley, drowned while bathing at Sumner on Thursday, was recovered to-day by the search part} T , DUNEDIN, Nov. 24. A labourer named John Gordon, who was arrested this afternoon on a charge of stealing a watch and chain from an hotel, committed suicide in the police cell bycutting his throat with a penknife. He expired shortly after being discovered. He had been searched, but the penknife must have been secreted purposely. The gate money taken at the show yesterday amounted to £217 13s 6d, Nov. 26. An inquest was held to-day on the body of John Gordon, who committed suicide in the lock-up yesterday. On being brought in he told the police that drink had brought him into trouble. The verdict was that deceased committed suicide whilst in'a- state of temporary insanity, and that deceased had been searched in
the usual manner when placed in the cel!, Nov. 27. Amulet has been scratched for all his engagements at the Spring Meeting, . GREYMOUTH, Nov, 24. Mrs Smith, a married woman, who has been leading a drunken and, dissolute life of late, was found dead this morning. The cause of death was drink. Her house was quite destitute of furniture, her husband having left her some time ago on account of her bad habits. At the inquest a verdict was returned of died from alcoholic poison. • ASHBURTON, Nov. 24. The Agricultural and Pastoral Show held at Ashburton yesterday was the greatest success, and attended by an immense concourse of spectators. There were a very large number of exhibits, nearly 600 in implements. P. and D. Duncan secured most of the prizes. Nov. 27. A man named Win. Fisher was charged at the Police Court this morning with indecently assaulting three little girls. The children being too young to be sworn, the charge .was altered to that of indecent exposure. There were several previous convictions recorded against the prisoner for indecent assault, and he was sentenced to sis months’ hard labor. -INVERCARGILL, Nov. 24. _ The officials on the night goods train on Thursday night found the stationmaster’s office open at Edendale, and the safe on board a truck on the floor ready for removal. It is supposed that the burglars were, scared by the approach of the train. There was a considerable sum in the safe. No clue at present exists as to the intended robbers. Nov. 25. A man named Campbell was drowned on Thursday through the upsetting of a whaleboat. He leaves a family mostly grownup. '
