HAWERA v PATEA. The first match of the season, Patea v, Hawera, was played at Hawera on Saturday, and resulted in a victory on the first innings for the latter by seven runs. It mined all day up (ill about 3 o’clock, .when the match commenced, but the weather kept fine daring the time the two innings were being played. The Patea Club owe their defeat to the absence of Mr F. Rdad, who did not turn up, as promised. Several blunders were made by men running each other out foolishly. The captain also did not use his usual tact, in allowing 27 runs to be scored by the two first men.without changing the bowlers; and

when they were changed, in not putting Dixon on. The Haweras had the assistance of Fred. Bayley, from Waitara, who came down specially for the match. Beresford and Cunningham, for the Haweras, played a very fine innings. Although the latter did not make a great score, he kept his wicket up while the former scored. Beyond the first two mentioned of the- Haweras, none of the others can claim credit, and their fielding was simply disgraceful. The young colt Doneghue. rather astonished them. He took 6 of their best wickets in a very little time for 24 runs. .Fulton and Donoghue were the only two who got into double figures. Pulton’s batting was'much admired, and be played a grand innings for 33, without giving a single chance. It was said by by (he onlookers that he was the best batsman on the field, and our young colt the best bowler. The Patea team fielded well considering the grass was wet and slippery.
