HAWE RA.

(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) The Prince of Wales’ birthday passed quietly hero. The Volunteers were shooting all day, and a dance was held in the evening, which was well attended and went off very pleasantly. The Cricket Club sent an inferior team to New Plymouth and gOi put through by 40 runs. The general topic hero now is : ‘‘Who is to bo Mayor?” There are only two candidates spoken of with any certainty at present, Messrs W. M. Thomson! and G V. Bate. Both gentlemen are Councillors and pretty well broken in,. There is < some talk of asking, Air W, J. Furlong to stand if he arrives in time.

There is a dispute between the lessee of the Recreation giound and tiie cricketers. The lessee claims that ho has rented the whole of -the Reserve, and has given the cricketers notice to clear out, but they .naturally decline to go. I expect the ipatter will bo settled at the next meeting of the Borough Council. It is with regret I hear that Mr 0. Ranson, manager for Mr F. R. Jackson, has decided to seek fresh fields and pastures new, Mr Ransbu has been in the district about eighteen months, and his Jobs? will .be; felf, as ho took a great interest in all kinds of sport, and was mainly instrumental in starting the Egmont Jockey Club, of which he was the Hon. Sec. The Club will find it hard to get anyone to fill liis place. itanson will, leave about the end of the year for Auckland, in which place he has decided to settle. A few. ladies in Hawcra have, presented Mrs McGuire with a slight token of their regard in the shape of a card case, before leaving for Auckland, Mr McGuire having decided to settle in that city. His loss to this district will be felt, and several townspeople think that his past services deserve some acknowledgment, and have organised a committee for giving him a dinner. Nothing-definite has yet been arranged. The eclipse of the sun on Monday was the subject of interest, and pieces of smoked glass were called into use to a large extent. The Drill Hall on Monday night was fairly well patronised on the appearance of.Mr Harry Power, with bis Combination Troupe, and .those who were there seemed to thoroughi} 7 enjoy themselves. A cricket match is to bo arranged between the combined A.O.’s and Ilawera. The return with New Plymouth is also talked of, and what with the visit of the Auckland team, we shall have quite enough on our hands. There is also some talk of getting a team to go to Wellington and Nelson, during Christmas week. The Rev. Mr Root arrived here last Tuesday week, and preached for the first time on Sunday.
