ARRIVAL OF THE WAIHI.

The long expected Waihi pm in an appearance this morning having came round from New Plymouth’ where she had sought shelter from the heavy gale of Thursday and Friday. The vessel is owned by the Union Steamship Co., and is in fact the smallest boat they possess. Her gross tonnage is 92, the deduction for motive power being 29, leaving her net tonnage 63. She is fitted with a very compact diagonal compound surface-condensing engine of 20 h.p. nominal, everything connected with the engine-room being of very neat appearance. The Waihi was built by Messrs Denny Bros., of Dumbarton, and sent out in sections to Port Chalmers, whore she was put together by Messrs Morgan and Cable. She has one cargo batch, about 15ft by 9ft wide, and is a very convenient boat to load and discharge. Aft she has a neat little cabin, capable of accommodating 12 passengers easily, besides a small ladies’ cabin. She brought over 70 tons of cargo here, and it is said that she could have stowed away another thirty. She certainly presents the appearance of having unusual carrying capacity on a light draught, and the unanimous verdict of those who visited her to-day was that she appeared to be in every way suited to the trade. She will bo dispatched for Wellington in the morning.
