WANGANUI SHOW.
The attendance at the above Show was not quite so large as on the previous year, ami the number oC exhibits showed a slight falling oil, but the quality was a great improvement, especially in horses and cattle. In the draught stock class, Mr W. Craig was awarded first and champion prize with Sir Robert Bruce, and also gained similar honours with the Clj'dosdalo marc Flower. In both draught yearlings and fillies Mr Craig was awarded first and second prizes. Clansman and Lord Lowe were greatly admired in their class ; the former securing second honours after a close competition. The exhibits of thoroughbred stock were not of equal merit with the draught horses. In the class for mares first place was taken by 'Mr Lethbridge’s Foam boating Mr Tloslop’s Swectsauco. The class for stallions was bettor represented, and Hippocampus (the winner of the first and champion prizes) was the subject of considerable interest. Ho was also awarded Mr Drew’s Cup of £5 fis. Cap-a-pie was awarded second honouss, and both Barbarian and Dilke looked extremely well. Mr J. McLennan was successful in the class for weight-carrying backs, second place being gained by Mr d. Fleetwood. The first prize for light backs was carried oil by Mr W. (I. Walt’s Fathom, Messrs Baker and Allison’s gelding by May King - second. Tho ladies’ hack competition was won by Miss Today’s chestnut gelding, which was ridden by Mrs W. Patteson. The ladies handled their steeds in capital style, ami were the subject of much admiration. In I lie single carriage horse class, a gelding, I he properly of Miss Imlay, gained first prize, and Mr lleslop’s Bose second prize. A number of exceedingly handsome ponies were exhibited, including Mr W. 11. Watt’s pony Cupid (Ist prize), Mr W. F. Bussell’s Vernon, Mr Lethbridge's .Johnny (Jilfm, and a number of other interesting little specimens of horseflesh. The prizes were about equally divided amongst them. The hunters’ competition was .keenly coli-
tested, and finally resulted as follows : Bradlangh Ij Hinu 2. In cattle (he entries were within two of last year but the quality was much superior. In bulls first honors were gained by Messrs Arundel and Ross’ Sir Hercules, Mr Owen Hawes’ Springfield Duke, and Mr G. Y. Lethbridge’s Invincible Ist and Kingcote were very highly commended, highly commended, and commended respect!vely. In Glass B Mr Larkwortliy’s Umbelini, which was awarded a first prize last year, was again successful ; the second place being taken t>3' Mr H. A. Owen’s Premier. In Class D Mr W. Craig carried off first prize with his Duke of Waiora. In Alderney hulls Mr James Booth took a first prize. The female animals were not equal in point of merit with the bulls. In Class F Mr G. Y. Lethbridge’s Formosa 2nd was awarded Ist prize. In the remaining classes Messrs Craig and G. Y. Lethbridge pretty equally divided the honours as prize-fakers, Mr Larkworthy, Mr Booth, and Mr J. Abbot being also prize-winners, Mr Larkworthy’s Champion Charmer being awarded the champion prize, as well as first prize in Class H. The entries in the sheep classes were unusually good. In Lincolns the principal prize-takers were Mr W. Wilson, Messrs D. and W. Blair, and Mr James Dickie. Mr Wilson carried off the Ist champion prize for Lincoln ram, and Messrs D. and W. Blair for Lincoln ewe. Messrs Baker and Allison, Robert Hair, and Robert Wilson were also among the prize-winners in Lincolns. In Leiccsters Mr W. H. Watt was the principal prizetaker, Messrs W. Craig, Moore and Currie, and J. Stone also taking prizes with some fine exhibits. In cross-hreds Messrs D. and W. Blair and T. Thatcher were the only exhibitors, the former taking four first and two second prizes, and the latter, who competed in two classes only, taking one first and two second prizes. Messrs W. J. Willis and F. R. Jackson were the only exhibitors of Romney Marsh sheep, the former gentlemen securing a large proportion of the prizes. In longwools Mr James Dickie secured first prizes in Classes Y3 and Y4 for ram and ewe hoggets respectively, while in Classes Y1 and Y2 Messrs Baker and Allison secured first pvrze for long wool ram and ewe respectively. Mr F. R. Jackson’s cup, value £lO 10s, for the best pen of 5 ram hoggets, was awarded to Mr W. Wilson, and Mr Mackersoy’s £5 5s cup, was awarded to Mr James Dickie, whose pen of 5 long wool ewe hoggets were considered the best. In pigs, Mr R. Hair cairied all before him. The poultry exhibits were above the average, but the class for Produce was not so well filled as it ought to have been, Mrs John Heslop was the most successful in the latter. The agricultural machinery class was one of the best in the Show, and excited great interest. Taken altogether, the past show ma} r be considered one of the most successful yet held.
