AUSTRALIAN. A telegram from Melbourne dated Oct. 18th, says : Messrs Goldsborongh and Co. held their opening wool sale for the present season to-day. There was a crowded attendance of English, Scotch, Continental, and American buyers, in addition to those from (he various Australian colonies. The bidding was active, and competition very brisk, the prices realised being very satisfactory. The catalogue comprised 1000 bales. Malting barley is in fair demand at 5s 2d to 6s 4d for grain of good quality. Wheat has advanced Id during the .week, and is now worth 6s 8d to 6s lOd. The market is quiet. New Zealand feed oats are unchanged at 4s 4d to 4s 6d. Milling sorts are quoted at 4s 6d to 4s Bd, an advance of Id upon last week’s prices. Buyers are holding off, and to effect sales lower prices must be accepted. DUNEDIN STOCK MARKET. Fat cattle are in good demand. Bullocks at the weekly sales realised up to £l2 7s 6d, and cows up to £l2. Prime beef is quoted at fully 80s per lOOlbs.— Fat sheep are brisk. Crossbreds sold during the week at from 8s 6d to 16s Bd, and merinos at from 6s to : l2a 9d. Prime mutton is quoted at 2|d per lb. Fat lambs sold at from 6s to 12s 3d per head. Pigs brought from 15s to 72s per head. In sheep-skins, butcher’s crossbods brought 5s to 5s lOd ; merinos, 5s to 5s 6d ; lambs up to lOd each. Desirable lots of hides fetcii 4d per lb for 601b hides and over, and 3|d for 451bs to 601bs, and 3d for lighter ones. For sound calf-skins, 3£d are offered. Tallow re-acts favorably. Wool is in good demand—Supercross, 17£ d, first and second combings ‘fd bred, equal quantity, at 13£ d ; third combing inferior and discolored, at lOd. Potatoes are in good demand for shipping, if they arc dry and in sound condition ; the same can be easily placed at from £2 15s to £B.
