(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Oct, 20. The City Council have refused to take a poll of the burgesses on the question of bringing, into operation or otherwise the contagious diseases Act. At yesternight’s meeting several councillors expressed an’opinion that legal proceedings should be taken againsta so- called religious paper for printing ;an obscene advertisement intended as a skit bn the Act. Sir George Grey has promised a further gift of old manuscript to the Auckland Library. WELLINGTON, Oct/20, Captain William Callow, owner and captain of the well-known trading schooner Saucy Lass, died rather suddenly last night. , It Is supposed from heart disease. HAVELOCK, Oct. 20. Mr John McDowell’s house at Kaituna Valley, miles from Havelock, was Burnt to the ground at 4 o’clock this morning. The fire was occasioned by the bursting of a kerosine lamp. The children wetre rescued, but the furniture was all burnt although assistance was at hand. The bnilding alone was insured for £l5O.
