LINSEED CULTURE.
Linseed, if not, already sown, should be in the ground early this month. To supply the oil and fibre mills now- established |iu < the colony, there is now a good demand, both for seed and straw, to be used in the manafacture of twine, -linseed oil, and nilcake. There is plenty of land Jn this country that will grow linseed and in time, no doubt, the industry will become a very important one. Of late it seems great improvements have been effected in the scutching machines. The American,Vegetable'Fibre Company, Philadelphia, have patented a machine which is said to do away with the expensive hand labour usually employed in scutching. TheThe Aniericansdiave hitherto been large growers of linseed, simply for the seed ; but since the introduction of twine-bind-ing harvesters, the demand for twine has increased so rapidly that, to meet this demand, have determined to ' utilise their straw for, the purpose, hence the production of machinery capable of supplying their wants at a minimum of cost. Straw can be utilised for a similar purpose in this colony,.and it is.proposed so to use it in the Smith, a company having been established for said/therefore,that a market is opoir for the purchase of linseed, and any quantity • will be’ bought af fair prices. At: the .present,-there is not much' danger of the 'market being glutted with the article. -•
