IN TERPROVIN CIAL. (per press association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 16. The Harbour Board tug Moturoa has been ashore on the north spit, Waitara, for the last i three or four days. She is not off; yet. WELLINGTON, Ocf. 16. The Royal Commission, to which is referred the question of the alternative routes of the South Island Main Trunk Railway has been definitely settled, the commissioners being Dr Polleu, and Messrs J, T, Thomson and J. Fulton, M.H.R. It is understood that the Commission will be gazetted forthwith, and that the commissioners will shortly afterwards depart on their mission. The spread of measles in the city has had the effect of further diminishing the attendance at the public schools, and in three of them the rolls show that only one-half the usual number of children now put in an appearance. Detective Benjamin it is believed, will be stationed at Wanganui. DUNEDIN, Oct. 16. Jane Elizabeth Gray, aged 22, attempted suicide at the Ocean Beach yesterday. She was observed to place a bottle to her lips and then dash into (the waves. She was rescued with difficulty. No reason is assigned. A petition is in course of signature praying the Queen to establish a protectorate over the New Hebrides. In Beattie’s case 8 were for acquittal, and the remainder for conviction. On Court resuming in the Oamaru murder case this morning, the foreman intimated that there was no probability of the jury agreeing. Jury were then discharged. Mr O’Meagher said he was unequal to proceeding with the case again at present, and he agreed that the new trial should take place at the January sittings. Beattie was removed to his former .custody. Eight of the jury were for acquittal and the remainder for conviction.
