THE WESLEYAN QUARTERLY MEETING.
CSiar , October 10.) The quarterly meeting of the Patea circuit was held in the Wesleyan Church, Hawera, yesterday. The balance-sheet was considered in the forenoon. The receipts were on the whole considered to be satisfactory. A special donation swelled the Patea subscriptions to a handsome sum ; Hawera showed improvement, while Manaia reported a considerable increase on all previous quarters. But affairs in Normanby were not so encouraging : for the whole quarter Normanby only sent in— Collections, £2 Os lid ; subscriptions nil. At a further stage of the meeting it was resolved that the Ministers from a finance committee, and arrange if possible for a better state of things there. At the afternoon session reports from the were presented. The Patea school is progressing. Hawera school : numbers weekly swelling. Manaia school it was thought could do a little better. There has been an increase of four members during the quarter, and 17 on the year. At the last meeting, Mr Max. D. King gave notice that he would move that the circuit be divided —Hawera to constitute the head of the new circuit. On Monday Mr King informed the meeting that as the result of careful thoughtful deliberations his views had been somewhat modified, and that he would not press the motion. He said that the question had "iven rise to some ill-feeling, and that it was rumored that Hawera wished to shirk responsibility, and therefore he thought it would be as well on that account not to press the matter. And there was still another consideration. At Hawera a new church was about try be erected, and it would be advantageous to hold on to Patea, the “oldest and wealthiest” portion of the circuit, for one year at least.
Mr Dingle concurred with Mr King, and said that if the resolution' was passed by the quarterly meeting he thought that the district meeting would throw it out. Hearty and unanimous invitations were given to the Ministers to remain another year in the curcuit—the Rev. Luxford for the third year, and Rev. Jones for second. Mr Luxford accepted the invitation ; Mr Jones left his appointment with conference. The plans of the Hawera Church were laid before the meeting, and consent was given to the trustees to proceed with the building as soon as possible, Messrs R. Dingle, G. Hurley, and Rev. T. F. Jones were appointed as a committee to arrange for a meeting at Manaia to consider what can be done to beautify and improve the church there, and set the Sunday school on a good footing. A report from the Rev. Torry for the use of Manaia church, for service every alternate Sunday was favorably received. The name of Mr Maunder, a very acceptable lay preacher from the Auckland district, was placed on the plan. If possible services will be arranged for at Okaiawa during the coming quarter. The meeting, which was very pleasant and harmonious, was closed at 4 p.m.
