It is announced that the Patea S.B* Company have appointed Mr Cray, of Normanby, as auditor of accounts. The advantage to be gained by going so far afield for an auditor is not apparent. The meeting of Patea Volunteers did not take place last evening, the weather being very unfavorable for attendant*. The question of holding sports on New Year’s day is therefore postponed. There is a dangerous place at the south end of the Whenuakura bridge, owing to the space between the sides of the bridge and the road being unprotected. The danger of riding or driving at night is great. In driving cattle it is also troublesome, as there is a chance of them jumping down to the river. A dusty debate took, place in the Borough Council on Monday, anent the building of a watering cart. Some large ideas, and some very small ones, found expression. Jokes, anger, eloquence, and finance, all got mixed in this curious debate. The cart was “ carried ” by a narrow majority ; and the speeches are fully recorded in the Mail, for the instruction of •anxious ratepayers.

The question of machinery was postponed, pending some inquiries which are to be made. Accounts were passed for payment, and the directors will meet again shortly. O’Connor, the runner, was presented with a chronometer valued at 30 guineas, last week at Dunedin.
