PATEA MAIL Established 1875. CIRCULATION nearly 600 COPIES. Average circulation last year, 510.

Friday Evening, Sept. 29, 1882.

Delivered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Evenings by mounted messengers —at Hawera by 7-30 o’clock, at Normanby by 8-15, at Manaia and Waimate Plains by 8-30, and Southward at Waverley (for train) by 6 o’clock.

TO THE PATEA PUBLIC. In resigning the Patea Mail to my successor, after the present issue, I have to perform the regretful duty of saying farewell to all with whom I have had relations of business or friendship in this district. Until three months ago, I had no intention of removing, but hoped to make my home in Patea, where I have labored as a journalist for years, and gained I hope the good-will of all who sympathise with a straightforward advocacy of the interests of the many, as distinguished from selfish scheming.

It is satisfactory to be able to say that the circulation of the Mail has nearly doubled since my connection with this district, and that the number of subscribers was never larger than it is to-day. I hope to see the popularity of the Mail increased under the management of my successor ; and during the short time I remain in the district to close accounts, it will be a pleasure to give any help I can as a contributor to the news columns of the Mail.

Mr J. H. Clayton, my successor, has not been able to leave. Christchurch so soon as he desired ; and I shall have to act as his deputy for a few days. Having been successful as a journalist in Canterbury, he comes to this district with the reputation of a good man of business and an experienced writer. To those who feel a kindly interest in my future movements, I can only say at. present that, having more than one project in view, I hope soon to enter on a new enterprise in which I may be of some public use, I have met with so much kindness from settlers and townspeople in this district, and so much generosity from personal friends, that for these reasons alone I regret to leave the district.

Edward Houghton.
